Wrapping up Grade 2 2024-2025!

“You're off to Great Places!

Today is your day!

Your mountain is waiting,

So... get on your way!”

― Dr. Seuss

And just like that, our school year has come to an end!

The week was filled with moments of reflection as the students tidied up the classroom and sorted through the numerous tasks and projects that they completed over the school year.  The students proudly took home all of the work they produced this year. We ended the week by celebrating the many achievements that have been accomplished this year and bidding farewell to classmates who will be taking on new adventures.

It has been a wonderful year of learning, falling, growing and making mistakes - all the things that are expected and welcomed in Grade 2!
Wishing all of you a wonderful summer break, and all the joys and success for the coming school year.
It has been an honour,

Student-Led Conferences

The Grade 2 students spent the week preparing for the Student-Led Conferences (SLC) evening. The evening was a chance for the students to present the concepts and themes that they had learned over the school year. There was also an opportunity for reflection and planning for the future. The students reviewed the goals that they set earlier in the school year and planned for the areas that require improvement in the coming school year. The fact that their cherished parents were their unique audience makes the experience so much more special. Thank you to all the families for coming to support our second graders, not just on SLC night, but every day throughout the school year. The students beamed with pride as they took a moment to absorb all the learning, growing and stretching they have done this year!

Congratulations to a group of our Grade 2 students for being part of the English Football Cup winning team! Way to go, boys!

One of the students will be celebrating his birthday during the Summer break, so he kindly brought some gifts to celebrate with his classmates!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Art styles, art presentations and art experts

The students had a wonderful and very busy week inquiring into visual art.

Art style research presentations

They did an excellent job of researching an art style and presenting their findings to the class. Romanticism. Fauvism. Op Art. Photorealism. The students learned about all sorts of art movements, and the conversation afterwards involved looking at differences and similarities between the movements.

The Art of Poetry

During our English lessons, we have been learning about poetry, particularly different poem styles. The students put on their poet hats and wrote beautiful haikus this week. Haikus are a short poem style originating from Japan. The students wanted to add a watercolour painting to complement their haiku, so that is what they did. Parents will be able to view the students' poetry and art at the SLC.

Learning from visual art experts

The students were treated to two professional artists, who happen to be DSKI parents, sharing their knowledge and expertise with them this week. Mr Carl Cornish shared with the students how to do traditional 2D flipbook animation. The students enjoyed seeing how simple it can be to create animation (moving pictures) with very limited tools.

We were also fortunate to have Mr Aymeric Kevin present to the students about the work that he does as an art director and what inspires him to create his personal art.  The students were inspired to see that Mr Aymeric started with a passion as a young child, and he put a lot of effort into honing his skills, and even as a professional artist today, he is still learning.

A big thank you to Mr Carl and Mr Aymeric for sharing their skills and time with us!

We look forward to seeing all our parents at the Student-Led Conferences!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms Theona

The History of Art

This week, the second graders continued to inquire into different forms of visual art.

The students spent time discussing and sharing their thoughts on what art is and how it makes them feel. The students came to the conclusion that art is subjective; different pieces of art will have different effects on different people.

The students expressed their feelings and thoughts about art when they reviewed some famous artworks. Through this interview-like process, the students experienced how art can make us feel or think different things.
On our Wonder Wall, there are numerous questions from the students about the age of the oldest painting. That prompted us to look into the history of art and inquire about the first recorded human artwork. The students shared their knowledge of people drawing and painting on the walls and ceilings of caves in prehistoric times.  The students were fascinated to learn about the Altamira Caves in Spain, where humanity's earliest art has been recorded. The students then set out to make their own cave art.
Stay tuned for the final product!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
